So many purchases

It has been pretty rough so far. In my last email, I explain the issue I was having with my Optiplex 745, named PERSEUS. It is otherwise a great computer, so I am going to give it to Brother and Stephanie as a gift. Their computer is about 9 years old, and I am sure they could use the upgrade. So, I am in the process of building an HTPC from parts. Here are the parts:

Case: nMEDIAPC Black Aluminum (link)
Mainboard: ASUS M4N68T-M V2 (
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 (
RAM: Crucial 4GB PC3-12800 (
HD: Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM (
Optical: LG 10X Blu-ray Burner (
NIC: ASUS PCI-G31 (link)
Firewire: SYBA IEEE 1394a (link)
Keyboard/Mouse: Rii Portable (link)
PSU: Can’t remember… 600W with 2 rails
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8600GS 512MB

The ones in bold are the ones I recently purchased. The others, I already head. The case I purchased has a firewire port in the front, but there was no firewire header on the board. Since the PCI card was cheap and has a firewire header, I went ahead on purchased it. Originally, I had order GSkill Ripjaw RAM (link), but no matter what I did, the OS would BSOD right after the Windows logo came up. I did some research and learned that ASUS mainboards and GSkill RAM have been a really unstable combo. Neither company seems to be doing anything to address the problem. I am in the process of RMA, and I have ordered Crucial RAM to replace it. Most of these parts I have. The others are still on their way.

The new computer’s purpose will be to run Boxee, PowerDVD, and VirtualBox. With 4 CPU cores, 4 GB of RAM, and a TB hard disk, I suspect this machine will be an excellent virtual machine server. This machine will run Windows Vista 64bit Business (the only 64 bit license I own), and I think I will name it HERCULES. In truth, I would rather this machine be running a Linux distribution, but since Microsoft and Netflix suck and don’t support ReadyPlay on Linux, I have to make it Windows for now.

Earlier, I had to purchase some lecture notes from Colorado State University. These lecture notes are for Advanced Calculus. I have to teach myself some sections in order to prepare for my first class, which is Probability Theory. I also went ahead and purchased my Probability book and my Mathematical Statistics (summer term) book. I also haven’t paid my tuition yet…

Julie also purchased something giant for me. I don’t have any idea what it is, but it is heavy.

For the niece and nephews, we were able to purchase all their presents around 1-2AM on Black Friday from Walmart. I also purchased Julie’s Christmas present (one of them anyway) on Black Friday, but I did that online. I still need to think of a second present for her.

I finally got an answer back from Santa Fe College about the Java Developer position I applied to way back in August. I was actually surprised. This was the first instance were I got an answer back without asking, and they actually sent me a letter thanking me for my application. Anyway, they said that they never hired anyone and were not going to. Bummer… This means that all my applications I filled out have been rejections. Man… all this education has really paid off, huh? Sigh…

I have my Calculus 3 and Differential Equations finals Monday (12/6) and Tuesday (12/7). I will probably be making B+ or B in each of them :-

If you click the links on the hardware above, note that I probably did not pay the prices currently listed. Keep in mind, I got Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on most of them. Also, I did not buy everything from NewEgg; it was just convenience that I linked there.
